The Chasm
Sunday 7/1
We were determined to make more progress today. We’ll revisit this section of the road on our return and can “meander” then. The word “meander” has special meaning for our family. When our kids were young, we would sometimes jump in the car and take “meanders”. The rules were simple: 1). NO freeways! 2). We determined the route by majority rule. So if we got to a fork in the road, we all participated in the decision on which road to travel. 3). Anyone could call a “stop” at anytime to explore something that interested them.
Despite our determination, we got another late start—we are loving the freedom of starting whenever it happens. The final tally for the day, 305 miles. The first half of the day, we continued to the follow the Fraser and later the Thompson River gorges—gorgeous. Later the topography flattened, and the trees shortened. Reminded us both of northern Wisconsin. Two memorable stops: One at Chasm to view a mini Grand Canyon and the other at 100 Mile House where we birded on a local marsh. Our $200+ fuel bill was also memorable! Up hill and down hill driving + $1.15/liter gas prices = yikes! We are eager to see some serious wildlife. Today we saw a few deer, a bald eagle, and two yellow-bellied marmots, but we want moose, caribou, and bears! Ended the day at another rest area. A very nice and quiet setting near a small lake.
